NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER, 2008

Oct. 13th Club Meeting: Our October meeting was exciting as usual. Lot’s of members were present as everyone is always glad to see each other and share horse tales.

Election: This was the meeting for our annual elections. The officers for the 2009 year are as follows:

President: Wanda Crowe Vice President: Angie Todd

Secretary: Renee Jones Treasurer: Lois Delawder

Sergeant at Arms: Roger White Internet Goo Roo: Jim Crowe.

As for our last work day of the year, we made great progress. Once again, many members got together and really worked hard and had the whole paddle creek trail head cleaner than ever.

Plus, we are very fortunate for the Rangers that have been so willing to work together with us on projects at the trail head. One great accomplishment was getting new boards put on the tie stalls and a few extra tie stalls put in. WNF provided the lumber and with the help from Rangers; Shawn & Scott, the new tie stalls were up in a few hours.

While some members were working on the tie stalls, others were working on cleaning up the campgrounds. (Some non-horse campers left some nasty messes behind them.) There were members picking up trash, mowing with riding mowers and push mowers, and others were weed eating. Earlier in the year Jim & Sabrina Watson went to the camp ground with their tractor and bush hog. They got a lot of the major brush and weeds knocked down. We have been doing pretty well since they did this in keeping the weeds under control. It has been a good effort from all in keeping the campground neat and clean the whole summer.

We now have the signs back up as you enter the campground that say that the trails and camp site has been adopted by the Lawrence County Horseman’s Council. This looks really nice as you enter the area.

HOW ABOUT THE NEW CULVERT ! ! ! We’re doing an awful lot of thanking for things lately. We are once again proud to announce that thanks to a lot of effort from some of our club members and the WNF Rangers the county has put in a big new bridge to replace the old rickety one coming up the road to Paddle Creek. Whew! The old one was pretty scary & tricky to get across.

The Rangers will now be able to bring in gravel trucks and the backhoe to fix up the picket line areas and tie stalls. Talk about progress, we sure have made a lot this year.

St Jude Update:

Money collected: Many members turned in their money at the St. Jude Trail Ride. Some collected donations from friends and fellow workers and one member (Jessie McCarty) even went to the extra effort and set up a booth at Wal-Mart and at the Catlettsburg Auction and collected money for this fund raiser.

More St. Jude money was turned in at the October 13th meeting and we are awaiting a grand total from Charlie & Sarah Whitt. We have surpassed our goal of $3,000.00 and are somewhere around the $3,500.00 range. I hope to have a total to give you by the next newsletter. I am so proud of everyone for their effort for such a good cause. Great Job!

The Auction! For those not present at the St. Jude Ride or the Club meeting this past month, you should know the extraordinary effort that so many put forth for this fund raiser. Many members donated items or got donations for the auction. Others helped by buying lots of items which also helped in supporting this auction quite well. Jerry & Angie helped us out a lot by running the price up on items (only to find out they were bidding against each other). Dale’s son Larry and many other guests were buying lots of stuff too. We really appreciate everything that was done to make this such a great event. Not to mention the auctioneers that pumped everyone so well to get all the items sold as high as possible. Thank you Charlie & Jerry for your excellent auctioneering skills!

The Ride! What a nice day to ride. We rode out of camp in several groups so we wouldn’t have too many people riding together all bunched up. We know what that can cause. Thankfully all went well. No one had any problems during the ride and all those riding had a really good time. Many members stayed overnight and rode again on Sunday.

Most Important of all….-The Dinner! I don’t know what we’d do without Angie. She brought the food, the grill and cooked. It can’t get any better than that for those of us that take off riding and come back hungry and tired. We sure do appreciate her. Plus, this isn’t the first time she has done this for us all. She has cooked for us at many of our rides. So, a special Thank You Angie, we really do appreciate all you’ve done.

Stone Church Trail Ride: This ride was scheduled for the weekend of October 18th & 19th. Several members were planning on going up for this ride. I was not able to attend this ride therefore will report on it at a later time.

  UPCOMING EVENTS:

Trial Ride Lake Vesuvius-This Saturday!

Jerry Elliott brought up at the last meeting that he would like to see everyone get together for a final ride at Vesuvius since we have been having such good turnouts for our rides there. It was suggested that we cancel the Zaleski Ride on November 1st and ride at Lake Vesuvius instead. Everyone agreed that this was a great idea and that we should dress up ourselves and our horses since this is the Halloween weekend. This will be Saturday November 1st, at Lake Vesuvius. I would suggest being at camp between 10:00 & 11:00 a.m. We hope to see as many members as possible at this ride since this will probably be the last club ride for the season.

Trail Ride from Renee’s House in Scottown, OH

Mark your calendar. November 15th! Weather permitting( ride to be reschedualed)……. Due to popular demand I will be having my Second Annual Fall Roundup. Last year we were lucky enough to have some really nice weekends in November. Therefore I put on a trail ride from my farm in Scottown. Hopefully, we will have some warm days again in November this year.

My Scavenger Hunt on Horseback was a great success. Prizes were awarded to the winning team. This year I will be doing something similar but don’t want to give anything away so that no body can cheat and get stuff ahead of time. Some people really took the challenge seriously so I wouldn’t put anything past them this year. Dinner and Bonfire/Campfire to follow ride.

I am also planning on having an Extreme Cowboy Race before the trail ride. I will be taking a limited number of entries for this race. A course is being set up to test and challenge you’re riding skills. It doesn’t matter what breed of horse, age of participant or skill level. The rider will be scored on effort, ability, willingness, horsemanship and time taken to complete the course. Points will be calculated and the winner will receive a grand prize. So email or call me if you are interested in entering this event. ymcacowgirl@yahoo.com or call 740-643-0262.

Club Christmas Party It was decided at the October meeting to have our Christmas Party at the Mamre Baptist Church at the top of Kitts Hill. This is the church that Mike Shannon attends and he reserved the church for December 13th More info to follow regarding this event.

NEXT MEETING: NOVEMBER 10TH – 7:00 P.M. South Point Snak Shak
